Lighting your outdoor space is an important part of decorating your outdoor space. If you’re not sure how to go about lighting your space, here are a few suggestions.

• Choose an architectural focal point. Your focal point can also be anything that you want to draw attention on, like maybe the pool, a tree, or a walkway. Light the focal point in a way that it enhances its best features. If you have a fountain in the middle of the garden, you can use uplighting or place lights in the water itself. If you want visitors to focus on a walkway, place uplights along the sides of the walkway.

• Make sure the lights are hidden except when they’re meant to be decorative. Hide the lights in a clump of bushes or leaves or behind a garden architecture. Make sure the focus is not on the light itself but on the object you want to focus on.

• Be sure to light walkways and doors. Just because you’re into decorative lighting, doesn’t mean you forget functionality. Light your walkways, arc ways, and doors properly so that guests won’t have a difficult time finding their way around your outdoor space.
